We never know how high we are
Till we are called to rise;
And then, if we are true to plan,
Our statures touch the skies.

Hello Everyone,
October is Women’s History Month in Canada. EFTO, which represents over 73,000 teachers, occasional teachers, and education workers employed in Ontario’s public elementary schools, is spreading the word about the relevance of Women’s History Month:
“Women’s History Month represents an opportunity to highlight the past and present contributions of women to Canadian society and to recognize the achievements of women from all walks of life as a vital part of our Canadian heritage. It also provides an opportunity to highlight how we all benefit today from the achievements of the original Famous Five and other women activists in the quest for women’s equality. And, foremost, it represents an ideal opportunity to instill a sense of pride in our historic origins as well as to provide role models for all Canadian women – young and less young.”

Learning about the history of the women warriors who preceded us has intensified my commitment to ensuring all children have equal access to quality speech therapy services. As an advocate for telepractice, my colleagues and I have faced barriers such as preventative legislation and lack of reimbursement for service provided via telepractice. Today, bylaws and S-LP’s Code of Ethics have been adapted in many regions to include telepractice. Likewise, telepractice is now being reimbursed in some states. A persistent whisper, a strong voice, a relentless roar – women hold the courage, the knowledge, and the passion to make positive change despite any obstacle. It is our resilience and resourcefulness that enable us to gratefully take the baton from our foremothers and to walk forward with our eyes on the horizon and our heart-in-hand.
Believe in yourself. There is a community of people who already do. The Status of Women (SWC) is a federal government organization that promotes the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of Canada. Its website provides a platform of support, inspiration, and celebration. http://www.swc-cfc.gc.ca/
