Recently I was asked to ponder the question, “Who represents authentic leadership to you?” Immediately I shouted out, “My little brother!” I have known Greg his entire life. Growing up, Greg consistently tried to make the world a better place for people around him. When I was little, I decided that I would run away. So I did – all the way to the end of our driveway. I sat there on a rock.Shortly after that – Greg toddled out of the house carrying a big bowl of popcorn. He walked up and handed it to me.
In high school, Greg was a star football player. He was also the guy who embraced the students who were new to Canada – many could not speak English. They formed such strong friendships that they are still “brothers” today. In University, Greg had a successful band that made CDs and played here and there. He was also the guy got his friends jobs and let them live with him. After graduating, Greg traveled the world. He shook hands with families from South America, to Asia, to Australia. He brought back the human spirit.
Now Greg is the CEO of TinyEYE Therapy Services. Mr. Sutton has no ego. He exudes vision and enthusiasm. His relentless resourcefulness along with his deep rooted belief in his service has breathed endurance into the company. He never hires strangers. That is, by the time he hires a person – he has already developed a positive relationship with the individual. He goes as far as driving them to work if distance becomes an obstacle during tough weather. He hand picks his employees based on excellence; however, they have to have the TinyEYE spirit or they will not last a day.
As a forever learner, he mandates that his staff take on the same philosophy…stronger with each challenge. There are the standard formalities and complete respect all around -there are also hip hip hurrays and standing ovations for a job well done. As the leader – he fosters thinkers and doers. You can call TinyEYE – a happy person will answer the phone. Following Greg’s example, the TinyEYE team applies their hands, head, and heart to create the place where magic happens. You see, Greg is in the know. He knows his team, he knows about the diversities in people, he knows how to inspire, he knows his service, and he knows the people he serves by name. He is authentic because he has not only pioneered a leading-edge technology that has connected people internationally – he has grown the TinyEYE spirit. He does not light a fire under people. He sparks the fire within them.
My brother – a hand shake, a smile, and changing the world for children in need of speech therapy services.
