Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children perform tasks required or desired in their day-to-day lives. OT can help in many ways, including:

  1. Assist children with sensory processing issues (inability to synthesize all of the information coming in from the five senses) to develop tools or methods to properly respond to sensory input.
  2. Develop skills expected for their age, such as independent dressing, eating, hygiene & mobility.
  3. Improve behavioural skills, such as appropriate response to different feelings.
  4. Help a child learn to follow 2- or 3- step instructions.
  5. Improve focus and social skills among children with sensory and/or attention issues.
  6. Work on gross motor skills, such as balance, strength and endurance.
  7. Work on fine motor skills, such as cutting with scissors and colouring within the lines.
  8. Develop the coordination skills necessary to feed themselves, use a computer, or improve handwriting.
  9. Provide strategies to improve children’s participation level in classroom activities.
  10. Assist students with preparation for post-high school independent living, employment, and/or post-secondary education.
